If a disc could not be read

When no video you can watch could be taken out, the screen says this.

Text shown on the screen

No video that can be watched could be taken out. Thank you for waiting so long. Nothing on the disc has changed.

Before you buy, the free "Disc Rescue Lite" lets you check, at no cost, whether videos are found and whether the places it checked can be read. It cannot promise that the data can be taken out.

As a next step, you can do the following.

The app shows on the screen what to try next for your disc (re-inserting it, gently wiping the reading surface and so on). It never suggests writing to the disc or initializing it. The steps are on the How to use page.

When a disc could not be read, or the app behaves oddly, you can send a problem report from the app (optional, and available in the free version too). You only choose from set options, and everything that will be sent is shown on the screen before you send it. The contents of your disc are not sent.

Frequently asked questions

Does it write to or erase the original disc?

No. It only reads the disc and never writes to it or erases it. However, because a damaged disc is read for many hours, sometimes for days, a weak disc may get worse and the drive may be put under strain.

What should I do if Windows asks whether to format the disc?

If a message asks whether to format or initialize the disc, do not press it. The contents of the disc could be erased. This software never changes the contents of the disc.

How long does it take?

It varies a lot with the condition of the disc. Checking takes a few minutes up to about 30 minutes. Taking data out of a damaged disc can take from several hours to several days. You can stop at any time, and the results so far are kept.

The power went out, or I closed the window, in the middle of reading

However it stopped, you can resume from where it left off the next time you start the app. What was already read is kept. This is the same for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, and also when it stopped at the time limit. The steps are on the How to use page.

I inserted a different disc from last time

The app says it is a different disc and refuses to continue. This is so that two discs are never mixed. Please insert the same disc as last time.

Will all my videos come back?

Some discs cannot be recovered, and sometimes only part comes back. There is no guarantee that videos will come back. The result screen states, without hiding it, how much did not come back.

Does it work with music CDs and CDs that hold files?

Yes. For a music CD, it makes one audio file (WAV) per track, plus a record of where each track starts and ends. For a CD with files (CD-ROM, CD-R), it checks the contents for errors, then takes out the files in the parts that could be read. CD-R discs written in several sessions, and CD-R discs whose writing was never finished, are also supported. The free "Disc Rescue Lite" goes only as far as checking; taking out and saving are done with the paid version.

Some CDs cannot be recovered. For a music CD, the app reads scratched spots again and again and counts a spot as "read" only after the same sound has been confirmed, but we cannot say the result matches the original sound. Spots that could not be confirmed are left silent, and the list shows which track and roughly where.

What is the music CD "comparison with the online record"?

When the paid version saves a music CD, it sends a string of numbers like the disc's table of contents (where each track starts and where the disc ends) to an online public database (CUETools Database), to check whether the result it read matches the record. The sound itself, your name and the like are not sent.

Even when the result matches the record, we cannot say it is the same as the original sound. For a disc that is not in the database, or when there is no internet connection, the app only shows "not compared", and your saved files can be used as they are. If you turn off "Compare with online records" in Settings, nothing is sent. For details, see the Privacy Policy.

Can unreadable spots on a music CD be repaired?

With the paid version, when a record is found by the comparison, spots that scratches made unreadable may be repairable from that record. The app asks you first, and only when you decide to repair does it fetch the data needed for the repair. The repaired result is saved as a separate file, and repaired spots are marked as "rebuilt from the online record".

The repair is used only when the whole disc matches the record afterwards. If it does not match, nothing is changed. A badly scratched disc, or a disc with no record, cannot be repaired. Even when the result matches the record, we cannot say it is the same as the original sound.

Can it take data off copy-controlled CDs (CCCD)?

No. When the app finds a copy-controlled CD, it explains that and stops. This is treated the same as the copy protection of DVDs and Blu-ray discs: there is no function to remove it.

What is a problem report?

It is a report you can send from the app when a disc could not be read or the app behaves oddly. Whether to send it is up to you (optional). You only choose what fits; there is no box for writing text. Everything that will be sent is shown on the screen before you send it.

Only these are sent: the app version, the Windows version, the drive model (only models on our list), the disc type and capacity, a summary of the result, the time taken and the reason you chose. The contents of the disc, file names, your name and the like are not sent. It can be sent from the free version too. Received reports are deleted after 90 days. We do not reply to reports. If you need a reply, please send us an e-mail. For details, see the Privacy Policy.

Does it work with discs recorded from TV, or commercial discs?

This software is for taking out video from discs you filmed or recorded yourself. It has no function to remove the copy protection (CSS, AACS, CPRM and the like) used on commercial discs or on recordings of TV programs.

For a disc holding a copy-protected recording, the contents can be read, but this software cannot turn them into something that plays. If such a recording is found during the check, the app tells you.

I want to know about the price and refunds

Checking a disc is free with the free "Disc Rescue Lite". Taking out and saving videos is the paid version: launch price JPY 980 (until January 15, 2027), planned regular price JPY 3,950 (tax included, one-time purchase). Refunds are explained on the Price and refunds page.

If I buy it once, can I use it forever?

There is no time limit on your right to use the version you bought. However, it may stop working because of future changes to Windows and the like, and we cannot guarantee how it will work in the future. Updates and replies to inquiries are provided while it is on sale, and for 6 months after sales end. For details, see the Terms of Use (Japanese only).

Until when are updates and support provided?

While it is on sale, and for 6 months after sales end. The date sales end is to be decided. The last day of support is to be decided. When the dates are decided, we will announce them on this page and on the Microsoft Store page.

Are the contents of my disc sent anywhere?

The contents of your disc (video, photos, sound, files) are processed only on this PC and are not sent out. The app talks to the internet in only these three cases.

  • When the paid version saves a music CD, the comparison with the online public database (CUETools Database). Only a string of numbers like the disc's table of contents is sent. You can turn it off in Settings.
  • With the paid version, fetching the data needed to repair unreadable spots of a music CD, only when you decide to repair.
  • A problem report, only when you decide to send it (the free version has it too). Everything that will be sent is shown on the screen before you send it.

Sound and your name and the like are not sent. The only thing the free Lite version can send out is the third one, the problem report. It does neither the comparison nor the fetching of repair data. For details, see the Privacy Policy.
